intertextuality

Definition of Intertextuality - the process of referencing a type of media in another type of media e.g. referring to a film in a music video.

There are three well known forms of intertextuality which are; television, film and music videos.

Music videos

Intertextuality can  be seen in Madonna's music video where there are scenes included that mimic Marilyn Monroe's "Diamond's are a girls best friends" video. Madonna's song focuses on a girl who only goes after men with money, which was also the main focus of the Marilyn Monroe's song. Another reason why Madonna has decided to mimic the music video from Marilyn Monroe was because at that time that Madonna was getting more popular, she started to be compared to Marilyn Monroe.

Intertextuality can also be seen in Shania Twain's music video "Man! I Feel Like A Woman",which is a role-reversed version of Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love" where she is the one standing in the middle while men who are all dressed alike surround her with blank-eye look on their face, imitating the women from Palmer's video.
