While roses look like very delicate flowers and are often associated with love, they have sharp thorns. The singer leaning on roses can represent her finding comfort in pain. Her song called "S&M" confirms that as it is about enjoying pain.

Red lipstick is often associated with femininity and is used for the digipak cover to show that the album is likely to be about love.

The white dress she is wearing is used to represent her innocence and purity while some of the songs contradict with that like her song "Man Down" which is believed to be about the incident she was in with her then boyfriend and her desire for revenge. The dress represents her still being pure at heart but laying on roses can show that she now looks for comfort in pain.
